Purchases of Hospital Equipment

The Health Department is seriously concerned with the fact that, under the present system of finance, it is difficult for hospital boards to resist requests by their medical and other staffs for new equipment. Mr A. B. Von Keisenberg, representing the department, said this when presenting additional submissions in Wellington to the Consultative Committee on Hospital Reform. It was also difficult for boards to satisfy themselves that additional equipment of a type already in their possession was not warranted, having regard to the use that would be made of it, said Mr Von Keisenberg. The department s view was that prior notice should be given by a board to the department even for minor items, so that an objection or a query could be raised where the expenditure seemed unvfarrantert.—YP.A A
