SIR CECIL HARCOURT NEW CHAIRMAN The Canterbury branch of the Victoria League has been advised from London that Admiral Sir Cecil Harcourt has been elected chairman of the Victoria League. He assumed the appointment on July 10, 1953. Sir Cecil Harcourt was lent to • the Royal Australian Navy from 1935 to 1937; and commanded His Majesty’s Australian Flotilla. In the Second World War, he took part in the Allied landing in North Africa, and saw considerable service in the Mediterranean. In 1945, he was in command of the force that re-occupied Hong Kong, and was appointed Commander-in-Chief and Head of the Military Administration in Hong Kong. Sir Cecil Harcourt was Second Sea Lord in 1949 and 1950. He was Com-mander-in-Chief, the Nore, for the next two years. He was made a K.C.B. in 1945. Honours have also been conferred on him by Nationalist China, Norway, and Denmark. Aged 61, Sir Cecil Harcourt is a widower, and he has no children.
