PROBLEMS OF NEXT DECADE CONFERENCE PLANNED FOR CHRISTCHURCH A new venture for the department of economics at Canterbury University College will be a conference on capital development in New Zealand in the next 10 years. Assisted by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, the department has arranged for the conference to be held in Christchurch on August 28 and 29. Papers will be read at the conference by Dr. W. B. Sutch, economist in the Department of Industries and Commerce; Professor C. G. F. Simkin, head of the department of economics at Auckland University College; and by Mr P. L. Porter, a former general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, who is chairman of the Capital Issues Committee. These sneakers will discuss three aspects of the subject: New Zealand’s capital requirements—in the physical, not the financial sense—in the next decade; how priorities can and should be determined; and the problem of finance. . The conference will open on the evening of Friday, August 28, and will conclude the next afternoon. If there is time, the papers and. discussions on them will be summarised at the end of the conference by a member of the department of economics. It is expected that the conference will be attended mainly by members of the departments of economics of the university colleges and members of Government departments, including oossibly the Reserve Bank and the Treasury Department.
