FIRM DENIAL BY NATIONALISTS
Assault Described As “Most Successful”
(Rec. 11 p.m.) TAIPEH, July 20. Nationalist Chinese military authorities today described as “complete lies and foolish propaganda” the Communist Chinese claim of victory against the Nationalist guerrillas who last Thursday invaded Tungshan Island.
The Nationalist authorities said the raid was one of the most successful campaigns of its kind ever staged by “toughened guerrillas” in the last few years. The Nationalists said the guerrillas, after landing at four points simultaneously on Thursday, were in full possession of. Tungshan hours later. They crushed resistance by four Communist battalions of regulars and militia estimated ’at 2400 men.« After occupying the island for 30 hours the guerrillas successfully withdrew to their base at Quemoy Island taking 300 Communist prisoners with them, the Nationalists said.
The Nationalist Official News Agency reported today that the first batch of wounded guerrillas had been brought by air to Formosa from Quemoy Island, three miles off the Fukien coast and two and a half miles from Tungshan. It gave no total of the Nationalist casualties in the raid.
