RAID ON CHINA COAST
Nationalist Defeat Reported (N.Z. Press Assr 'iation—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) PEKING, July 20. Communist Army units defending China’s south-eastern coast wiped out more than 3000 of Marshal Chiang Kaishek’s troops, invading Tungshan Island, between Fukien and Kwangtung Province, on July 16, according to the Peking Radio. “At 5 a.m. on July 16, with air and naval support, more than 10,000 Chiang bandits invaded Tungshan Island,” said the radio.
“At the same time, more than 200 enemy paratroops landed north of Tungshan. “People’s Army units launched a fulscale encircling operation against the Nationalist troops immediately they landed.
“Militiamen and people on the island backed up Communist units. “The same afternoon all enemy paratroopers were wiped out. “People’s Army units then carried out mopping up operations and inflicted heavy casualties on the invaders, who fled in confusion.”
