SOVIET AND TURKEY

Renunciation Of Claims

(Rec. 8 p.m.) MOSCOW, July 20. Moscow newspapers yesterday published the text of the Turkish Government’s reply to the Russian declaration of May 30 renouncing her previous claims to Turkish territory and special privileges in the Dardanelles.

“The Government of the Turkish Republic notes with satisfaction the declaration in which the Government of the U.S.S.R. declares that the U.S.S.R. does not have any territorial claims against Turkey whatsoever,’’ said the reply. “The Government of the Turkish Republic declares that the concern for the maintenance of good neighbourly relations and the strengthening of peace and security, to which reference is made in this declaration, fully corresponds with the concern which Turkey has always manifested, and will manifest.

“The Turkish Government considers it necessary to emphasise in this connexion that the question of the Straits, as known to the Soviet Government, is regulated by clauses of the Montreux Convention.”
