THEFTS AND CAR CONVERSIONS

YOUNG MEN ADMIT CHARGES

PROPERTY VALUED AT £10,449 (Now Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 20. Thefts and car conversions involving a total property value of £10,449 were admitted by two youths in the Magistrate’s Court today. The offences were committed in the Auckland, Whangarei, Hamilton, and Thames districts. Property worth £10,124 was recovered. r Roslyn Donald Orr, aged 17, a labourer. and Richard Joseph Franklin, aged 20, a labourer, admitted 12 joint charges of conversion and 15 joint charges of theft Angus St Clair Treadaway, aged 21, a cabinetmaker, admitted a related charge of conversion and one of receiving jewellery, cutlery, clothing, and other goods worth £202. Senior-Detective J. B. Finlay said that the first conversion occurred at Bayswater on May 22, and the three men when arrested on June 28 were wearing stolen clothing. In their first offence Orr and Franklin took the converted car to Rotorua. They would abandon one oar and take another. After their escapades they returned to Treadaway’s home at Brown’s Bay-. Then the three picked over the stolen property, kept what they wanted, and abandoned the rest. In some cars they had travelled 2000 to 3000 miles. Senior-Detective Finlay said that Orr was the instigator and Franklin was easily led. When Treadaway was arrested he told detectives: “It is an unfortunate day—and in one way fortunate. It is my twenty-first birthday, and I come into money and property left me amounting to £10,000.” Counsel for the three men withheld submissions till presentation of reports from the probation officer. Mr H. Jenner Wily, &.M., said the charges were very serious. He remanded the three in custody for a week for sentence.
