WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FEDERATED FARMERS

Russell's Flat.—Travel talks were given by the Misses May and Edna Hawke at the July meeting of the Russell’s Flat branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Mrs J. D. McLean presided. Competitions resulted as follows:—Marmalade: Mrs Fronting 1, Mrs McLean 2, Mrs Pierce 3. Indoor section: Mrs E. Hawke 1, Mrs H. A. Searle 2. Peggy square: Mrs McLean 1. Miss Bloor 2, Mrs J. D. New Brighton.—Mrs Moses presided over a very good attendance of members of the New Brighton branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, and welcomed three new members, Mesdames Osborne, Ryan, and Rowlands. Mrs Lonquet reported that sweets had been forwarded to the children at the School for the Deaf at Sumner. It was decided to forward a birthday gift to a male patient in the Burwood Hospital. A visit to a Christchurch factory was arranged. It was decided that the Christmas party take the form of a special afternoon tea at the Sign of the Takahe. The hostesses were Mesdames Barrett and Crotty. An interesting travel talk was given by Miss Carmichael on her experiences while travelling in Europe. Stewart’s Gully.—The July meeting of the Stewart’s Gully branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers was held in the local hall, Mrs Hopewell S residing over a good attendance of memers. Many visitors were present, as members had been given the opportunity of bringing friends to the meeting. One new member was enrolled. Before the meeting two English trees, an ash snd an English maple, were planted near the hall by members and their friends in commemoration of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth. A letter of thanks will be sent to Mr Bourne, of Stewart’s Gully, for his help in the planting of the trees. The resignation was received of Mrs Foster, who has left to live in Auckland. An invitation was received from the Marshland branch for its birthday party in August. Two films were shown by Mr Withell, of the Health Department. Marshall presided at the monthly meeting of the Waimairi-Papanui branch of the Women s Division of Federated Farmers. Competition winners were Mesdames McMillan, Struthers, Smith, Godfrey, and Harris. Mr J. Cummings organised a quiz session. Arrangements were made for a church pdrade on August 9 and a picture party on August 5. Hororata.—Mrs W. Oakley presided at the July meeting of the Hororata branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers and welcomed two new members. It was announced that the annual church service would be held the third Sunday in the month at the Presbyterian Church. Many remits for the Dominion conference were discussed. Two new members were welcomed. Mr B. W. Smyth, of the Adult Education Department, was the guest speaker. Competition results were as follows:—stem: Mrs Rowe 1, Mrs Gott 2, Mrs W. Evans 3. Carleton - Bennetts.—At the monthly meeting of the Carleton-Bennetts branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers Mrs Chapman gave a demonstration of the remodelling of felt hats, and displayed a large collection of arts and craft. Mrs Bennett presided, and welcomed visitors from the View Hill branch. The monthly competitions were won by the followingthree scones: Mrs Skurr 1, Mrs Harding 2, Miss O'Loughlin 3. Jar apple jelly: Mrs Skurr 1, Miss O’Loughlin 2. Knitted cardigan: Mrs Skurr 1 and 2, Mesdames Bennett and J. Farr (equal) 3.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Burnham.—Mrs Nicholas presided at the monthly meeting of the Burnham Country Women’s Institute. Members spent the afternoon making peggy squares for a quilt. A letter of thanks for a parcel, from the Greek sponsored child, was read. The hostesses were Mesdames Cresswell, Weeds and Hall. Competition results were:—three pikelets: Mrs Parker 1, Mrs Anstiss 2, Mrs Dawson 3. Covered coat hanger: Mrs A. W. Scott 1, Mrs Anstiss 2, Miss Wright 3.

Bryndwr—The July meeting of the Bryndwr Women's Institute was held in the St. John’s Hall, Jeffreys road, Mrs Mac Diarmid presiding over a good attendance of members. Mrs Roberts gave a report on the group meeting. Among other business it was decided to take a collection at the August meeting for the federation gift to Queen Elizabeth on her visit to New Zealand, which is to take the form of a donation to the Restoration Fund for Westminster Abbey. The choir sang some popular numbers. Mrs Richards, from Brighton, gave a demonstration of Swiss darning. Christchurch Centre.—At a special afternoon meeting arranged by the new members of the Country Women's Institute Centre, sketches and items appropriate for Coronation year were much enjoyed. Mrs Champion presided at the monthly meeting, and members agreed to give a donation for a gift to the Queen on her visit next year for the Westminster Abbey restoration appeal. Mrs H. E. Radley showed colour films of her visit to Great Britain. Competition winners were Mesdames Goss, Kenny, McGowan, Jenkins. Davidson, Collings, Stratton, Clarke. Magazines were collected for the mental hospitals. GOLF RANGIORA CLUB—Four-ball best-ball bogey match for the Mayor-Mayoress trophy: T. Chinnery and Mrs Hansen, 5 up; B. W.
