CONQUEST OF EVEREST

NO ISSUE OF SPECIAL STAMP IN N.Z.

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. New Zealand will not issue a special stamp to commemorate the conquest of Everest. The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department (Mr P. N. Cryer) said today that it would probably be about 12 months before a stamp could be placed on sale, and by that time public interest in the feat would have lessened considerably. “To stimulate real interest, a stamp issue would need either to coincide with the event or to appear shortly after the event,” said Mr Cryer. “There is this aspect, too, that already our programme for the next year is a heavy one. There will be the usual health issue in October, the Royal visit issue in December, and the new Queen series (including the official series) early next year. An ‘Everest’ stamp, even if it were approved, would be hard to fit into this programme.” Although with other New Zealanders he acclaimed the splendid achievement of Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa Tensing, he said, he was afraid that in the present case it would not be appropriate for New Zealand to mark the event with a stamp issue.
