POTATO PRICES NEXT SEASON

FIGURES APPROVED BY TRIBUNAL (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. The Potato Board’s recommendations for growers’ prices for main. crop table potatoes for next season had been approved by the Price Tribunal, said the chairman of the board (Mr F. C. Jurgens) today. The prices approved for potatoes of fair average quality grade are: North Island—£l9 a ton f.o.r. (sacks extra) for all varieties.

South Island—£l7 a ton f.o.b. (s.e.) for Sutton’s Supreme and King Edward, £l6 15s 9d a ton f.o.b. (s.e.) for Dakota, and £l5 15s 9d a ton f.o.b. (s.e.) for all other varieties.

As in previous years, the price for “good table” and “tagged” grades will be 10s a ton above the fair average quality price, and for “undergrade” 20s a ton below.

Growers in specified districts of the Nelson province will be authorised to receive an additional 10s a ton.

The approved prices are based on growers’ production costs as revised by the Department of Agriculture, and will take effect from March, 1954.

Opening prices this season for f.a.q. potatoes in the South Island (free on board, s.e.) were £2O for Sutton’s Supreme and King Edward, £l9 15s for Red Dakota, and £lB 15s for other varieties.
