LONDON WOOL SALE

PRICES REMAIN UNCHANGED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, July 17. Prices were again, unchanged when the London wool sales resumed today, says a report issued jointly by the Committee of London Woolbrokers and the London agency of the New Zealand Wool Commission. A total of 11,420 bales was catalogued. There were 9000 bales from New Zealand, among which slipes predominated. Greasy wools were in scarce supply but there was a considerable selection of scoureds.

The tone of the market was much the same as on Wednesday, most descriptions being in good demand and both the Home trade and the Continent bought steadily. Prices showed no material change and except in cases where sellers’ limits on slipe were high there was a good clearance.

One large consignment of greasy Merinos from Marlborough was offered and although this wool was of poor style, competiticfri from, topmakera was good. Most of the small selection of greasy crossbreds also came from the South Island, Invercargill being represented by the largest consignment, although some wools from Auckland and other North Island districts were available. The majority were taken by Bradford at prices firm on Wednesday’s level. A small quantity of speciality style Merinos and halfbreds was outstanding among the scoureds. They sold well, the Merinos being taken by German, West of England, and Yorkshire firms while the majority of the halfbreds went to Scotland. Prices were up to the best levels of the year. The scoured crossbreds mainly comprised offsorts from Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, and the East Coast clips, while some complete clips from the South Island were catalogued. Competition from woollen spinners was steady and prices for wool of 66’s quality and finer were firm but 50-56’s and coarser wools were in not quite the same demand, so that prices were occasionally a little in buyers’ favour. The range of prices was:—

HIGH PRICE FOR SCOURED

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 17. A particular feature of today’s London wool sale was the highest price paid for any scoured wool from the ,1952-53 New Zealand clip. This was 167Jd for nine bales of mainly 66*s quality but containing a few 70*s, from Haldon Station, in the Mackenzie Country, states the Committee of London Woolbrokers in a supplementary report.

The consignment was scoured by W. H. Cook and Sons at Fairlie, and was a choice bulky wool.

Competition for this lot was exceptional, and a buyer, acting with “at best" limits on behalf of a firm in Germany, came in to top all bids from the specialty firms in Yorkshire and Scotland, which are the principal buyers of scoured Merino* in London. GROCERY NOTES Business at the present time remains on a steady level, although the trade generally is watching the market in an endeavour to buy at the best prices and keep stocks down. Winter lines are still in good supply, and' with the very cold weather, canned soups, meat extracts for hot drinks, split peas, peas, barley, oatmeat and rolled oats are selling briskly. Stove Polish.—New prices have been announced for a well-known make of stove polish, and in future they will retail as follows: liquid, Is 9d a tin; paste, lOd a tin; and packets, 5d each. Household Cleanser.—An old-established brand, packed in Dunedin, has recently advanced in price, and in future the sizes will retail at 2s a tin for the No. 3 size, 3s 6d for the No. 6 size, and 5s for the No. 12 size.

Dental Plate Cleanser.—The manufacturers of a widely-used dental plate cleanser advise that in future the large size will sell at 5s a tin, and the small 2s 9d a tin.

Packet Tea.—For some time the price of packet tea has been reasonably steady, and in some cases packers have introduced tea to retail at 5s per lb. However. recently a North Island tea merchant advanced the price of cheaper tea and it will now retail at 5s 4d per lb. Butter Beans.—This is an old favourite for winter time and for the last two or three seasons the market has been in short supply. Nevertheless, stocks have been arriving in Christchurch recently from Madagascar, and once again are now available. The price appears to have increased about 3d per lb. Dried Peaches.—Stocks have been arriving from Australia, in this line. Although they are not large sellers, a reasonable demand has been noticed, even though the price is well in advance of previous loadings. Caustic Soda.—Recent prices show that 71b tins are now about 7s a dozen cheaper than previously.

DUNEDIN SEED MARKET (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 17. Seed markets remained steady during the week, with better inquiries for several lines. Merchants have taken a fresh interest in white clover and as a result more business has been recorded, with, if anything, a slight firming of values. Sales have been made of both certified and uncertified seed, and it is likely that the additional interest has been brought abqut by overseas inquiries.
