METROPOLITAN CLUB’S DISBURSEMENTS

As a result of inquiries made after the annual meeting of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club on Thursday, when members expressed concern at the criticism by the public of the expenditure of clubs at race meetings, the following detailed account of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s race meeting expenditure was provided by the treasurer of the club (Mr C. 'S. Thomas):—

“ ‘Expenses Race Meetings.’ as set out in the club’s balance-sheet for the year 1952-53, amount to £8478 8s 7d,” said Mr Thomas.

“Of this amount, £6BOB 12s Id is made up of wages (gatemen, officials, and overtime work on the grounds), and payments to the St. John Ambulance, for the hire of plants, public address system, bands, trophies and ribbons, taxis, photo-finish system, marquees, laundry, and sundries. “The balance of £1669 16s 6d is the amount paid for committee and stewards’ luncheons and teas, hospitality dispensed on the steward’s stand, complimentary luncheons and teas for guests from other clubs, complimentary luncheons and teas for the club’s members (according to the roster), meals for drivers, gate staff, and attendants.’’
