BETTING FACILITIES IN N.Z.

Sir, —Two news items today point to urgent need for reform in betting facilities. One is headed “Agency Betting.” “Synod Expresses Concern.” It draws attention to the expansion ot betting through the establishment of Totalisator Agency Board agencies throughout the country. The figures quoted, showing an increase in betting from £7.000.000 to £36.000.000 over 12 years, are staggering. Across the page. “Youth’s Theft of £516.” “Money Used for Betting” makes sad reading. Another young life wrecked. Defence counsel said: “This is another example of what can come from the elaborate facilities before the public for betting on horses. While they remain, there will be more cases.” ’The Church 4 n Wellington, the law in Invercargill, plead for reform. In the interests of those who so easily succumb to this kind of temptation, making shipwreck of their own lives and bringing sorrow to others, will the Government heed and act?—Yours, etc., REFORMER.
