BANK BUILDINGS IN TOKYO
(From a Reuter Correspondent) TOKYO. Residents of Tokyo complain that hundreds of new bank buildings are being constructed in Japan in spite of an acute housing shortage. They say that in Tokyo alone 11 bank buildings were completed during the first three months of this year,
Another hundred are expected to be completed within the next 12 months. There are 476 bank branches in Tokyo. One branch accepted 3,000,000,000 yen (about £3,000,000) in deposits the day it opened. In answer to the complaints, Tokyo Metropolitan Government said a shortage of building materials prevented it from constructing the umber of dwelling houses required to meet the demand. When the Government does build a house it holds public lotteries to decide who shall rent it.
