FORCES’ PAPER IN TRIESTE
JOINT BRITISH AND U.S. PRODUCTION (From a Reuter Correspondent.) FRANKFURT. A British and an American take turns daily to edit Trieste's joint Brit-ish-American forces’ newspaper—but they cannot agree on spelling and only just compromise on slang terms. The newspaper, which is mimeographed, has a combined circulation of 2000 and is a joint effort of Trust (Trieste United States Troops) and Betfor (British Element, Trieste Forces). It was described here in "Stars and Stripes,” newspaper of the United States Armed Forces in Europe. To Trieste Britons, the newspaper is the "News Bulletin.” To the Americans, it is the "Blue Devil Daily.” Both newspapers have the same content. The editors, Private Joseph D. Wolfe, an American, and Sergeant Webber, a Briton, use British and American news agencies to get their news. Constant conferences between them ensure a fair share of news from America and Britain,
Private Wolfe told “Stars and Stripes” of a slang problem recently. It concerned the appropriate heading for the week’s cinema programme. Private Wolfe wanted to make it "Tonight’s Movies.” Sergeant Weboer changed it every other day to "Tonight at the Cinema.” They compromised finally on "Tonight’s Screen Entertainment.” . . , . Spelling troubles are not yet solved. On Monday defence becomes “defense,” on Tuesday it is “defence” again. The same applies to “glamour” (glamor) and words like "organisation” (organization).
