A SOCIAL SURVEY

Sir, —Once more we read a statement in “The Press” by the Social Security Minister (Mr W. A. Bodkin) about a survey of the problems of the aged people of this city. Everyone is fully aware of the economic position of all pensioners, with increased costs over the last three years; but the Minister persists in giving lip service only, without rendering service. I would like to stress my own difficult fight for an existence, with a husband on an invalidity pension, plus six children of school age to provide for. It would be an education for the Minister and his officers to invite mothers in a similar position to mine to relate their cases at his departmental inquiry on July 6 to July 10. Crocodile tears do not give my children eggs, oranges or clothing that others get.—Yours, etc., HOPEFUL. June 24, 1953.
