USE OF OLD TRAMS
VEHICLES 'REQUIRED TO BE RENOVATED “What are the views of the City Council on the sale by the Christchurch Transport Board of old trailers and trams?” asked Cr. L. G. Amos at last evening’s meeting of the City Council. “One tram was erected at St. Martins by a very desirable organisation. What will the policy of the council be in the future? It is obvious that if they are distributed within the city without proper control they can be quite hideous things.” Cr. A. J. Smith (chairman of the works committee) replied that the tram was placed on the back section of the church. It was well out of sight. The permit was given on the understanding that it was “flossiedup quite a bit” (laughter). He understood that had been done. “The car has been renovated to the standard required by the City Engineer,” he added formally, ana amid laughter, “The committee had no hesitation in granting the permit.” Cr. Amos: What is the position in the future? The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.): The committee will watch the position.
