CATCHMENT BOARD DRAINS

Sir, —I would like to know if the Catchment Board has given up all hopes of keeping the drains and creeks round Halswell and Prebbleton reasonably clean, because at the present time they are in a shocking state. Old settlers in the district say they have never before seen them so high as they are at present in normal weather. It. makes one wonder what will happen if we have any rain, as they are now running bank high. What wonderful service we are getting for our high rates. Last year I paid £6 drainage rate on one and a half acres, and I understand they are to be doubled tnis year. Not a very bright outlook for the future if the service does not improve.—Yours, etc., J. U. G. SLACK.

June 8. 1953. [This letter was referred to the chief engineer of the North. Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr H. M. Reid), who said: “The height of water in the drains mentioned is due to a variety of circumstances, many of them over which the board has little or no control. If Mr Slack will get in touch with the chief engineer the whole position will be made clear to him.”]
