GENERAL CLARK “SHOCKED”

(Rec. 8 p.m.) TOKYO, June 20. The United Nations commander. General Mark Clark, told the President of South Korea (Dr. Syngman Rhee) that he was profoundly shocked at Dr. Rhee’s actions in ordering Korean Army guards to disobey his commands and release prisoners. In a letter published in Tokyo today General Clark said: “I cannot at this time estimate the ultimate consequences of this precipitous and shocking action on your part, nor can its effect on the common causes for which we have sacrified sc much during these past several years be forecast.” General Clark said the United Nations received a letter from Dr. Rhee in 1950 assigning command over all South Korean forces to the United Nations Commander.

Dr. Rhee had given the American Ambassador. Mr Ellis Briggs, himself several assurances in recent weeks that he would not take unilateral action on Korean troons until after full discussion.
