BANTAM-WEIGHT TITLE BOUT P. KEENAN MAY FIGHT J. CARRUTHERS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 19. The Glasgow promoter, Alec Lucas, has cabled Dr. J. McGirr, adviser to Jimmy Carruthers, the Australian holder of the world bantam-weight championship, asking his terms for a world title fignt with the European and British bantam-weight champion, Peter Keenan, of Glasgow, in Scotland. - Keenan regained his European title against Maurice Sandeyron, of France, in Glasgow last Wednesday. As it is unlikely that Carruthers will come to Scotland to defend his title, Keenan’s manager, Tommy Gilmour, stated today that during this week-end he and Keenan would discuss the possibility of travelling to Australia. . , The week-end discussion will deal mainly on finance. If Keenan and Gilmour consider they can get a good financial return by making the journey to Australia they will do so. Gilmour has already been in touch with an Australian promoter' about a Keenan tour of the Commonwealth, but the absence of Carruthers in South Africa at the time made it impossible for the promoter to meet Gilmour’s terms. The British Boxing Board of Control, however, may throw the plans of Gilmour and promoter Lucas out of gear. Keenan 'successfully defended his British title against Frank Williams, of Birkenhead, last February, and will defend it again at the end of August. The stewards have asked area councils to nominate contenders for Keenan s British title. They will probably consider these at a meeting next week. It will not be surprising if the stewards order Keenan to defend his title against Johnny Kelly, the Irish bantam-weight, probably Keenan’3 outstanding challenger, before the end of August. If this happens, then Keenan’s desire for a world title fight with Carruthers and the challenges to Keenan by Jake Tull, of South Africa, the Empire flyweight champion, and Hogan Bassey, of West Africa, will come to nothing.
