ALL BLACKS IN BRITAIN

RUGBY FOOTBALL

MR J. N. MILLARD TO BE MANAGER MR A. E. MARSLIN CHOSEN AS ASSISTANT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 12. Mr J. N. Millard, of Wellington, was appointed manager, and Mr A. E. Marslin, of Otago, assistant manager, of the All Black team to tour the British Isles, at today’s meeting of the New Zealand Rugby union. Each was elected on a first ballot. Mr Millard, who is 63, has had a notable administrative career in Rugby. He was appointed to the executive of the Wellington union in 1916, and became chairman in 1937. He was elected president of the New Zealand union in 1942, and president of the Wellington union in 1950. He was sole Wellington selector from 1927 to 1933, and has been a member of the selection committee in 1952 and 1953. He was sole New Zealand University selector from 4921 to 1933. This year, Mr Millard was appointed to the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union. Last year, he retired from the position of headmaster of the Hutt Valley High School. Mr Marslin, who is 52, is a sheep farmer in Central Otago. He represented Otago in 1927. 1928, and 1929, and the South Island in 1927 and 1928. He took part in the AH Black trials in 1927 and 1929. He has given outstanding service to ' country football in Central Otago. He . was a co-opted Otago selector in 1947, i 1948, and 1949, an Otago selector in 1950 and 1951, South Island selector in re 50, . 1951, and 1952, and a New Zealand selector in 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953. INCREASED CHARGES APPROVED INTER-ISLAND AND N.Z. TRIAL MATCHES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 12. Increased charges this year were not just for the sake of getting extra money, but because heavy increases in costs, as well as the claims of the union for grants, made them essential, said delegates to the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union today, when they approved increases in charges for the inter-island and AU Black trial matches. A statement submitted to the union by the treasurer (Mr G. H. Geddes) showed that expenditure to date this year exceeded income by £2816. During the meeting, the union approved loans totalling £3300, and grants totalling £3OO. Mr G. A. Brown (Manawatu) said he would not support the increases unless there were good reasons for them. There were heavy claims on the union for assistance. At the moment it had large funds. These were built up from big overseas tours, but when there were no such tours, the union generally ran at a loss. Saturday-morning schoolboy football had increased rapidly in popularity, and many of the smaller unions wanted assistance for it, as well as for grandstands and grounds, Mr Brown said. Mr J. H. Parker said he thought the reasons for the increases were obvious. Transport and accommodation costs had increased substantially, as well as the costs of assembling and outfitting teams. TOURS OF FIJI AND AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE PROPOSED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 12. The New Zealand Rugby Union today approved in principle the calling of a conference in New Zealand with Australia and Fiji to discuss future • interchanges of visits. It was agreed to pay the cost of one delegate fA)m each visiting coun-* try.

INTERNATIONAL BOARD REPRESENTATION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 12. The New Zealand Rugby Union today extended the closing date for nominations for its representative at the International Board’s meeting from June 30 to July 31. The extension was approved because the next meeting of the New Zealand union, at which the representative will be appointed, will not be held till September

MARIST AND OLD BOYS TO MEET TODAY BIG PUBLIC INTEREST IN MATCH The main Rugby football fixture in Christchurch today, between Old Boys and Marist, has created more interest than most championship finals. The main reason for this intense interest is that Marist, the Canterbury champion for the last three years, has lost its lead on the 1953 ladder to Old Boys, a team that has been one of the strongest contenders for the championship in recent years. Last year Marist and Old Boys contested the final of the senior championship, the match resulting in a draw, 3all, and Marist, one point ahead, took the championship for the third successive year. In the earlier round, Marist beat Old Boys, 6-0. Old Boys is at present one point and a half ahead of Marist on the championship ladder, and one point ahead of Christchurch, which has yet to meet Marist. Should Old Boys win today, the chamS ionship will virtually be decided beveen Old Boys and Christchurch. Patrons of Lancaster Park today should see a bright display of football from two teams that have the reputation of playing fast, open football. Seven Canterbury players—four from Old Boys arid three from Marist—will be fielded. The teams are:— Marist.—K. C. Stuart; K. P. Davidson, C. A. McDonald, S. J. Douglas; B. J, McCormick, J. G.
