DR. MORTON’S REPORT

Sir, —In today’s issue Miss Howard states “that she is pleased that the people of Christchurch do not agree with Dr. Morton’s statement that ‘milk is not a good food for children.’ ” This, by the way, is taken out of its context. What a piece of impertinence on Miss Howard’s part to make herself the mouthpiece of the people of this city! We know Miss Howard’s views, which fortunately do not carry any weight with the thinking people of the community. Dr. Morton has shown himself to be one of those rare professional men who think for themselves and have the courage to say so. If he was thinking of the stale, cooked-up rubbish being meted out to our children today, in the name of milk, then hundreds, perhaps thousands, of mothers will agree with his views. We. are most thankful that one man in authority is wise.—Yours, etc., W. B. CROWLEY. June 9, 1953.

Sir, —How we run true to form! Is there a town or village in the Dominion that cannot take criticism as we in Christchurch. So few wish to move with the times. The attitude of what was good enough for grand-dad is good enough for me is far too prevalent. I hazard a guess that many who criticize the report have ever been beyond New Zealand or seen the ’outside of a decent hospital, let alone the inside running of one. I shudder to think of the “white elephant.” at Cashmere being kept alive by these people. If only there were more men in our city of the calibre of Dr. Morton. We might get somewhere—even in Cathedral square.—Yours, etc., M.F.S. June 12, 1953.
