(New Zealand' Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 5. What ,is considered an outstanding art purchase, at a remarkably low price, has been made by the National Art Gallery, Wellington, through its London representative.

The purchase comprises eight original landscape paintings of the old English water-colour school.

One painting is an early Turner original, and another, by Peter de Wint, is stated by the London representative to be the “finest de Wint I have ever seen.” Mr S. B. MacLennan, director of the gallery, said the paintings, which were part of the Dean collection of the famous early English landscape paintings, had belonged to a wealthy manufacturer of Tamworth. near Birmingham, and on his death had been bought by the gallery’s London representative, Mr E. Herbert Thompson. “We were able to get in early before the dealers, and buy the paintings at considerably below the market value,” said Mr MacLennan.
