BRITISH EVEREST EXPEDITION
Early Withdrawal Likely
(Rec. 9 p.m.) KATMANDU. June 1. Fifteen members of the British Everest expedition will toast Queen Elizabeth tomorrow. 20,000 feet up on Mount Everest’s snowy flank'. The expedition intends to toast the Queen in brandy beneath the Union Jack. Experts at Katmandu are wondering if the expedition may have a double cause to celebrate, for it is believed that the third and final attempt to reach the mountain’s peak is being made over the week-end. It is thought that if the third attempt is being made to conquer Everest, it will end tomorrow at the latest, to allow the climbers to get clear of the mountain before the monsoon.
The monsoon is approaching but slowly. Described as moderate, it is still in the Andaman Sea area and the south-eastern part of the Bay of Bengal.
June 7 is thought to be the limit up to which it will be possible to remain on the higher slopes of the mountain.
A special forecast covering the Everest area for the 24 hours ended at noon today said there would be relatively light westerly winds, with occasional snow showers and colder temperatures.
