SECOND DAY AT DUNEDIN

ROBIN REDBREAST WINS STEEPLES

DOUBLE TO ADDITION AND NED KELLY (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, June 1. Robin Redbreast, third hi the Otago Steeplechase on Saturday, easily won the Wingatui Steeplechase for his Dunedin owner, Mr J. M. Samson, on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting today. A stablemate of Desert Trek, the Otago steeplechase winner. Robin Redbreast jumped neatly until he came to the last fence with a long lead. He misjudged his leap, hitting hard, but he cleverly kept his feet, and won by 50 years from Fort Silver, which beat the tiring Gold Song by two lengths. Robin Redbreast was a firm favourite. Addition, the runner-up in the Birthday Handicap on Saturday, came from the tail of the field for a narrow but convincing win in the Provincial Handicap, the first leg of the double. Her powerful challenge carried her past Dreenagh in the last few strides. Dreenagh also came from the tail of the field. Ned Kelly, also owned by Mr Samson, easily won the Members* Handicap, the second leg of the double. The eight-year-old Defaulter horse ran second in his race on Saturday, as did Addition, and with better luck he might have won. Ned Kelly was at his ease on the holding track, and he never looked likely to be caught after making most of the pace. There were 577 J tickets sold on the Addition-Ned Kelly combination, which paid £36 18s for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather, but the track was still holding. The on-course totalisator turnover was £67,838 10s, including £6750 10s on the double, compared with £73,785 10s last year. Robin Redbreast’s Win

Robin Redbreast ran past the weakening Gold Song before reaching the second to last fence in the Wingatui Steeplechase, which he won by 50 yards from Fort Silver, which beat Gold Song by two lengths. Robin Redbreast hit the last fence, but never gave his supporters any worries at any other stage of the race.

i Miro Chabo led for the first mile, but ■ Gold Song ran past him near the sod ; wall, with about nine furlongs to run. Seven furlongs from home. Gold Song was eight lengths clear of Robin Redbreast • and Money Lender, whose good jumping • had deteriorated. Robin Redbreast had Gold Song’s measure near the half-mile, the latter losing more ground when he screwed at the water jump. Robin Redbreast had no challengers after that. Fort Silver caught Gold Song inside the last furlong. Fort Silver had lost good ground at the post and rails,- nine furlongs from home. Money Lender plodded on for fourth, six lengths behind Gold Song and two lengths clear of Battle Sig- ' nal. Miro Chabo was the only other to finish, and he was a long way back. The Denbigh lost his rider at the second -of the double, and Mandeville, whose jumping had been poor, dropped his rider f at the next fence, the post and rails. Brilliant Finish by Addition last in the field of 17 with five fur- ’ longs to run. Addition finished brilliantly to win the Provincial Handicap from ’ Dreenagh, which also made her run from near the tail of the field. Formation was » a close third. Adc.itf.jn took up her usual position at the tail of the field inside the first furlong. Solman took over the running i near the seven furlongs from Diablo, which was pulling hard. Rust, in front of Argument, Defame, Cogitation, Royal Voyage. Gold Token, Taj, Danger Point. Redlo, and Formation. Cogitation moved forward to join Solman near the halfmile, and when the latter dropped out ' Formation moved through to share the lead on the home turn. Formation soon had Cogitation’s measure, but Dreenagh »then made her bid. to be caught right on • the post by Addition. • Argument was a fair fourth, a length • behind Formation, and Taj was fifth. > Cogitation was sixth, and next, almost in ‘ line, were Diablo, Dusty Miller, Redlo. ' and Brutus. The favourite. Royal Voyage. ■ was beaten early in the run home. He ; was eleventh. Second Leg of Double Ned Kelly, the veteran of the field, led practically all the way to win the Members’ Handicap, the second leg of the double. He ran the race out strongly, and won by a length and three-quarters from Canasta, which was slow away, but recovered her position quickly. Dissenter led early from King's Command, Major Neptune, and Ned Kelly, which were well bunched, Rust, ahead of Ptolemy, Mararoyal, Current, Delayed, Canasta, and Passing Parade. The bracketed pair, Ned Kelly and Major Neptune, were together in front at the halfmile, where Current. King's Command, and Dissenter were trailing ahead of Canasta and Ptolemy. King’s Command weakened on the home turn, where Major Neptune was alsodropping back. Ned Kelly was clear there, and none of the others could get near him. Canasta was clear in second place,' Current making up ground for third. Passing Parade also made up ground for fourth, two lengths back. Rust beating Ptolemy.- Royal Monarch was next to finish. Cherry Prince Wins Cherry Prince, a moderate fifth in the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting, decisively won the Roslyn Steeplechase. Gay Prince was in third position for the first two miles, moved into second place behind Pageant running to the last fence, and drew out in the straight to win by four lengths. Pageant just lasted to beat Riverstone for second, the weakening Irish Glance being six lengths back fourth. Irish Glance led into the last round, good jumping keeping him in front, but Pageant moved through to take over the running going into the back straight. Irish Glance and Pageant were on terms again at the half-mile, where they were six lengths clear of Gay Prince. Irish Glance was beaten at the three furlongs, Pageant leading to the last fence, which he ran down. Gay Prince closed on Pageant early in the run home, and 1 drew away after passing the furlong. River- ( stone, well out of his ground to the halfmile, just failed to head the weakening Pageant. Duvaals and Royal Venture were pulled up at the half-mile. Narrow Win for Ironside

Ironside was moving in at the start of the Novice Handicap, and the advantage he gained from the start helped him to win narrowly from Sun Goddess. Ironside was five lengths clear in a few strides, and he led past the six furlongs from Sun Goddess, Thelma Royal, Wyren, Lady Lothian. Spar, and Brown Baron. Sun Goddess moved through to join Ironside going to the half-mile, and these two had the finish to themselves. Ironside just lasting to beat the Riccarton filly by a head.

The little-fancied Brown Baron came from fifth place on the home turn for third, a length and a Half back, beating Royal Warrant by half a length. Royal Warrant, the second favourite, had every chance, being in the trailing position on the home turn. Haughty Step was a head back fifth, and Low Tide wa.s next to finish. Late Challenge by Waffles

Full Tilt and Colonel Argosy were having a hard battle for mastery over the final stages of the June Hurdles when Waffles came up fast to beat them. Waffles, a weak seventh in the Otago Hurdles, followed Full Tilt and Colonel Argosy into the straight, but he did not look likely to close on them until after the last jump. His late challenge gave him a head decision from Full "nit. Colonel Argosy weakening slightly for third, half a length hack. Sir Abbot was the early leader, but his jumping was not good, and he was going back through the field at the halfmile. There. Full Tilt was clear of Chasemint, and then there was a gap of two lengths to Colonel Argosy and Waffles. Colonel Argosy continued his run to join Full Tilt on the home turn, but these two could not match Waffles for finishing speed. Wee Mac fen at the five furlongs. Exchequer, the win favourite, did not jump well, and was beaten a long way from home. So was Chasemint, which finished well oaek. seventh.

Riga, and the favourite. Gay Fenian. Gay Fenian moved into second place on the home turn alongside Vocalise, but still five lengths behind Maritea. Maritea ran the race out gamely. Vocalise and Gay Fenian reduced her lead going to the fur*ng. but they could not close the gap.

He ran into a ‘clear lead on the turn, but Skelton had to pull the whip on him just after straightening up. Cheerio was a good third after being handy all the way, and Pukka Sahib finished strongly for fourth ahead of Cerne. Results:— ROSLYN HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE, Of £350.
