TROTTING CANTERBURY PARK CLUB

Outstanding Performance By Buccaneer

FIRST MATE SURPRISES IN HANDICAP

Buccaneer ran an outstanding trial for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton next Monday when he outclassed the field in the Juvenile Handicap, one of the main races at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addington on Saturday.

The son of Wayfarer and Queen’s Treasure began well frjm 12 yards, but soon after the start he had to be practically pulled up when the galloping Scotch Girl dropped back through the field. This cost him at least 50 yards, and he seemed to be wUI out of the race at the end of two furlongs. With just over six furlongs to run, F. G. Holmes sent him round the field to be handy to the leaders. He was clear two furlongs from home, but looked likely to be beaten at the furlong when the field closed on him, but he drew away again and was three lengths clear at the post

It was a most impressive effort which may make him favourite for the Ashburton race. He will be the hardest for Lynberne to beat Owned and trained by B. Grice, at Prebbleton, Buccaneer won the Timaru Nursery Stakes earlier in the season.

Other sound trials for the Ashburton race were those of Young Wexford, which finished on for second, and Scottish Brigade, which was only half a head away third, after having none of the best of the running over the last three furlongs. If the track is firm at Ashburton, Scottish Brigade will be hard to beat

First Mate, the tenth favourite in a field of 12, caused a major upset when he held off a strong challenge by Adorian to win the Winter Handicap. It was his first win for 17 months, although he had been placed in nine of his subsequent 23 starts. A plain-looking gelding by Grattan Loyal from Seaweed, he is raced by Mr G. Herman and trained by D. G. Nyhan at Templeton. On Saturday he was always one of the leading division, and moved up to challenge Maori Queen in the straight He soon took her measure and looked likely to win easily until Adorian challenged. It was a fine effort by Adorian, and his 3min 26 3-ssec for the mile and five furlongs on an easy track was more than useful.

Battleground won his fourth race from his last five starts when he outclased the field in the Fendalton Handicap, the first leg of the double. Battleground won most convincingly. He should be a big stake-earner next season.

In a pool of 60.370 5s tickets on the first leg 'of the double, 13,130 j were invested on Batleground, a warm favourite. Rosy Morn, winner of the < Ellesmere Handicap, the second leg, had 1356 tickets redeemed on her chances, the combination returning £36 15s 6d for £l. Other useful efforts during the day were the wins of Quick Silver in the Holmes Handicap and Real Globe in the Final Handicap. The meeting was held in overcast ■ weather before a moderate attendance. < The track was easy early in the day, . but it improved later in the day. I < Totalisator investments for the day j amounted to £744181. including i £6416 10s on the double, compared i with £88,071 10s last year. Buccaneer's Win ; Buccaneer began well in the Juvenile ; Handicap, but soon after the start he j was checked by the breaking Scotch Girl. Buccaneer lost at least 50 yards, and his position looked hopeless when he had 16 horses in front of him with one mile to run. F. G. Holmes took advantage of the slow pace set by Gay Lad and took Buccaneer up to third’ with five furlongs to run. Sue Scott was in the lead at this stage, but she stopped before the straight entrance, where Buccaneer was clear of Gay Lad. Final Glow. Blacksmith. Mandoza, and Invicta, with Scottish Brigade. Young Wexford, and Santa Amada showing up further back. i Buccaneer wm shakes up inside the j furlong, and he time away from the field ] to win well By three lengths. Young Wexford, which lost his position 1 tn the middle stages of the race, finished 1 strongly for second, ahead of Scottish I Brigade, which may have been a little unlucky. The Gore-trained gelding was a little slow- but he had a good run through on the fails. He raced in the middle of the field on easy going, which did not suit him. He was hopelessly hemmed in at the two-furlong post. He finally worked clear and finished strongly for third. Blacksmith was a good fourth, just ahead of a big bunch, which included Final Glow. Mandoza. Jack Direct. Santa Amada. and Gay Lad. with Dundonald . and Con. Scott at the head of the others. Grand Monarch. Sue Stott, and Scotch , Girl brok».»t the start. ; First Mate Surprises First Mate gained his first win for the J season when he beat Adorian narrowly in the Winter Handicap. The Grattan ’ Loyal gelding was never far away, and he , moved up to be handy to Maori Queen at the straight entrance with the tiring ; Brucus, Adorian, w’nich had gradually made up ground, and Lahore showing up. First Mate challenged strongly inside the ' furlong, and took the measure of Maori Queen with half a furlong to run. He was then challenged by Adorian, and had to be driven right out to beat him by half a head. Adorian, which started* from 36 yards, did well to finish so close up. He was patiently driven and ran on well. He should soon win.

Maori Queen battled on for third three lengths bask, a length in front of Lahore, which had been a good way back in the middle stages of the race, with Brucus beaten off in fifth place, ahead of Fallacy, which was never pacing well, and Duncraig. Win Fer Real Globe Real Globe, a warm favourite, won her fifth race for the season when she led over the last mile of the Final Handicap and held on well under a hard drive. She set a solid pace, and at the straight entrance was clear of Roschana, Diamed, Countermark, Knightmare, Girl Black, and Affable. Real Globe was strongly challenged by Roschana and Countermark, but she fought back gamely and won well by half a length in the good time of 2min 38 4-ssec for the mile and a quarter. Roschana, which had always been one of the leading division, fought on for second without looking likely to catch the winner. Countermark did well to finish third, as he lost a lot Of ground at the start and travelled wide over the last half-mile. He is very fit. Girl Black, having her first start since being trained in Canterbury, impressed by the manner in which she battled on for fourth. She was under pressure three furlongs from home, and looked well beaten at the straight entrance. She ran on well, and she should soon win. Knightmare disappointed by finishing only a fair fifth, ahead of Affable, Diamed and Gay Lyric. Vivanti, Inquisitive Lady, and Tiberius lost their chances at the start. Favourite Wins

Battleground, the favourite, made short work of the opposition in the Fendalton Handicap. He lost three or four lengths at the start, but immediately worked into a handy position Just behind the pacemakers. Popotai and Ballymena. Popotal and Bar Tender were together seven furlongs from the finish, but they had had enough at the straight entrance, where Battleground went to the front. The other pair were closely' attended by Eileen Lillian, Ballymena, Au Revoir and Lindy Lou. Battleground always had the measure of his opponents, and he won well by three lengths. Eileen Lillian, which began brilliantly from 24 yards and had a good run, finished well for second, clear of Au Revoir, which had been well back early. Popotai battled on for fourth, ahead of LindyLou, Laura Dillon. June Grattan, Bar Tender, and Brave Company. Gretna Green broke at the end of a furlong, and Virginia Scott ran into the back of her sulky and feU. Brave Company was badly checked, and did well to finish ninth. Magellan, Chief Lochiel and Recent Choice lost ground at the start. Results:

DRIVER FINED £lO AT ADDINGTON

H. M. Kerr, driver of Virginia Scott, which ran into the back of the sulky of the breaking Gretna Green with one mile and three furlongs to run in the Fendalton Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday was fined £lO for careless driving. At the inquiry it was found that Kerr, who was driving Virginia Scott at the rear of the field, had failed to observe due care when Gretna Green dropped back through the field. An inquiry was held into an accident in the Ellesmere Handicap. It was found that True Dillon, driven by D. J. McNaught, had touched a wheel of Greenwich’s sulky. True Dillop was trailing Greenwich at the time. The track at that point was very soft and sticky.
