CHAPEL FOR ARTHUR’S PASS
Sir,—ln the report of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board there was a note of incongruity that a chapel might be built a few feet away from the proposed hotel! This seems a little sardonic and an unfair advantage over the inebriates who might roll from the doors of the hotel into the arms of the church. Yet an undenominational chapel with an altar window facing down the valley to the ranges beyond could be an inspiration, only a little less charming perhaps than the chapels at Franz Josef and Tekapo. But why the insistence on a wholly unnecessary licensed house at Arthur’s Pass? It is a pity that yet another retreat has gone for the remnant of people who love these mountain fastnesses, unspoiled as they are. The granting of the licence was a disservice to Arthur’s Pass.—Yours, etc., A. X. MULLETT. May 14. 1953.
