CURRENT NOTES

Air Marshal Sir Basil Embry, formerly Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Fighter Command. Royal Air Force, and Lady Embry will arrive in Christchurch today. Sir Basil Embry, who is making an unofficial visit to New Zealand at the invitation of the Prime Minister (Mr Holland), has been appointed Commander-in-Chief, Allied Air Forces in Central Europe, under the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Lady Embry was formerly Miss Hope Elliot, daughter of the late Captain C. S. Elliot, R.N. Their only daughter, Miss Bridget Embry, was married at Auckland last Saturday to Mr V. J. Mackereth, a son of Dr. J. G. and Mrs Mackereth. She came to New Zealand about 15 months ago under contract to the Government as a herd tester. Her father gave her away on Saturday. Sir Basil and Lady Embry have three sons.

Mrs E. D. Glynn, of Otahuhu, this season’s champion of the Auckland Rifle Club, will leave this week in the Rangitane for England to take part in the shoot for the Queen’s Prize at Bisley.

The May meeting of the Fendalton Garden Club was held yesterday at the home of Mrs Keith Wallace, Heaton street, where the president (Mrs Athol Winterbourn) presided. The guest speaker was Mr D. J. Officers were elected as’ follows at the fifteenth annual meeting of the West of England Women’s Association: president Mrs Browing; vice-presi-dents, Mrs Eagterbrook and Mrs E. I. Rowberry; honorary secretary-treas? urer, Mrs Emerson; committee, Mrs B. The annual meeting of the Cash-mere-Beckenham sub-nranch of the Plunket Society was held in the Fisher street hall; Mrs Janet Williams presided over a good attendance.
