250 FORMER PUPILS IN CHRISTCHURCH

The smaller post-primary schools in country centres enjoyed the advantage of. staff knowing pupils personally, said Mr W. L. Jolly, headmaster of the Ashburton High School, speaking at the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Ashburton High School Old Pupils' Association. One Christchurch principal had admitted not knowing all the names of even pupils in tne fifth from. In Ashburton the staff knew every pupil, Mr Jolly said. Present estimates were that in 1964 the high school would have a roll of 380 and the technical school 400, Mr Jolly said. The Education Department’s decision this year that the Ashburton High School and the. Ashburton Technical School should be developed separately and on their present sites had removed a threat of amalgamation which had hung over the planning of both for nearly 20 years, Mr Jolly said. £3® reported that the association had 250 former pupils on its Christchurch register.
