ARSON CHARGES WITHDRAWN

AUCKLAND, April 17. AU charges against a youth who, when he appeared before Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, S.M., in the Children's Court at Auckland, admitted having lit fires which caused, a total loss of. £17,368 to owners and insurance companies, have been withdrawn.

In Mr Sinclair’s room at the Magistrate’s Court today, Detective-Sergeant B. G. Goldfinch said the youth had been admitted to a mental institution on Wednesday. On the Magistrate’s recommendation,

Detective-Sergeant Goldfinch withdrew the charges against the youth. The Magistrate said a medical report showed the boy to be mentally defective to such an extent that he could not be held criminally responsible for his acts in lighting the fires.
