NEW ATTACK BY ENEMY
Marines Recapture Korean Outpost (Rec. 12.10 a.m.) SEOUL, April 9. American marines today recaptured the strategic Canon outpost on the Korean western iront, north of the Panniunjon truce site, killing 150 Chinese and wounding 70 in fierce hand-to-hand fighting. The Chinese took the outpost early today, and then beat back one counterattack. A second Marine assault wave managed to dig in on top of the hill and eventually ousted the Chinese from the position.
The Carson, Reno and Vegas outposts which guard the way to Seoul and the south were heavily attacked by the Chinese a fortnight ago. American Marines retook Vegas after bitter fighting but the Communists still hold Reno. On the central front infantrymen of the South Korean 3rd Division recaptured the Texas outpost last night. They claimed that 80 Chinese were killed. Texas Hill has changed hands five times in two days. Belgian troops on the central front claimed that they killed or wounded 65 Chinese yesterday. United States Navy pilots from the carrier Philippine Sea claimed the destruction of 43 buildings containing ’Communist ammunition and supplies at Hungnam on the north-east coast yesterday. The pilots said it was one of the most successful raids they had ever made.
