HEART ATTACKS
Prevention Held Possible (Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 8. The prevention of heart attacks was declared possible by Dr. Ray Brown, of the National Heart Institute of Public Health Services, at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Biological Research. Dr. Brown reported that he and four colleagues had discovered how to maKe the “clearing factor” of blood synthetically on a large scale. He. said after anyone eats a meal containing considerable fat, his blood becomes cloudy with fats. In a healthy body this cloudiness was cleared up in a few hours by an unidentified body chemical which is called the clearing factor.” . . _ If, however, the body was not functioning properly, this fatty substance did not clear, but found a resting place in the arteries. It was suspected that this led eventually to arteriosclerosis. the most common form or hardening of the arteries, which caused 95 ner cent, of all coronary heart attacks. , . w With a ready supply of the clearing factor available for experiments, •cjtntists hoped to discover if arteno•dtrosis resulted from what the body ’ud with fats in the bloodstream.
