KINLEITH PAPER MILLS

WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM TESTED

The supply of water for the mills of the £7,000,000 Kinleith pulp and paperv industry from a stream five miles away was successfully tested recently. Working through the night, engineers and workmen pumped water over the pipeline to a surge tank close to the pulp mill. By the use of radioequipped vehicles and walkie-talkie sets, a check was kept on the flow of water at different points. During the trial, one of the six pumps was tested. Each pump is operated by a 375-horsepower motor, and pumps 2700 gallons a minute through the pipes. In the initial stages of production in September, the mills will use about 10,000,000 gallons of water each day. Later, consumption will reach 14,500,000 gallons a day—equivalent to two-thirds of Auckland’s water supply. The pipes used in the scheme are the largest of the spirally-welded steel type ever made in New Zealand. Each is 32 inches in diameter and 30 feet long, and weighs more than a ton. The total cost of the water supply project exceeds £150,000.
