MATERIALISM
Sir, —In answer to Mr E. H. Dennis, no-one respects a practising Christian more than I; but when we see professing Christians go to the races, win say £2O. and celebrate and rejoice, when a neighbour’s wife and children are going without necessaries, it makes a farce of Christianity. When we see people send children to Sunday school to learn to keep holy the Sabbath Day and come home to find mother ironing. father painting, and brother digging the garden, it is hypocrisy. Teach them to love their enemies, then in war time gaol them for putting that teaching into practice. I had a neighbour. a churchwarden, who, if he saw that a cow had tuberculosis or mammitis sent her to the first sale. The Scots say when churchmen draw up to £15,000 a year and live in palaces, “it winna ding.”—Yours, etc.. RATIONALIST. April 9, 1953.
