EFFECTS OF DEFENCE SPENDING CUTS

Sir, —So the United States has suddenly developed frankness by openly putting its cards on the table' for all to see. I refer to the article in your issue of April 9, page nine, “U.S. considers effects of defence spending cuts.” The article says that while war is continued “the United States has full employment and the nations a measure of unity with each other; but now they fear Russia will smile them into disarmament, deflation, unemployment and depression.” Does this mean that many humans have to be slaughtered to give others employment? Why is it impossible for each nation to practise humanitarian methods by giving social benefits and security for all to work and live together constructively? It would be interesting to learn which nation is the real instigator of the present war.—Yours, etc., TRUTH WILL OUT. April 9, 1953.
