DEVOLUTION IN UNIVERSITY
CANTERBURY COLLEGE DISCUSSIONS Devolution of more authority from the University of New Zealand to its constituent colleges was proposed by the Chancellor (Sir David Smith) in his formal address to the last full meeting of the Senate. Yesterday, the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. G. A. Currie) discussed some of the possibilities with staff of Canterbury University College. The college has yet to determine its own attitude in the matter. In the morning. Dr. Currie met the standing committee of the professorial board. He spent most of the afternoon with the full professorial board, which will eventually make recommendations for the consideration of the college council. Dr. Currie said yesterday that the general scheme had already been announced. He had -, been invited to Christchurch to discuss the more domestic questions involved in the devolution of academic responsibility. 9 The Vice-Chancellor will spend several days in Christchurch during capping week next month when he will confer degrees and give the address at the capping ceremony.
