RUNAWAY FUEL TANKER
HOUSES WRECKED IN VILLAGE
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, April 8. Firemen stood by in the partiallyrazed village of Lambourne. Berkshire, throughout last night as a pall of jet •fuel fumes lay over the quiet village, where a tanker overturned and exploded yesterday. The driver was killed, but nobody in the village was injured, although some houses and shops were smashed. Three shops and five houses were set alight and many more houses may be demolished as they are impregnated with fumes from the fuel. The tanker driver lost control as the huge vehicle descended a mile-long hill leading into the village. His mate jumped clear but the driver, who had been married for only a fortnight, weaved the eight-wheel tanker at 60 miles an hour through the streets with the horn blaring. The tanker failed to take a corner, ripped through shops and houses and crashed on to its side. The fuel exploded. sending flames high into the air.
