UNIONS AND LABOUR PARTY DUES

Sir,—l have just read in your columns the results of the recent ballots conducted by Tramway and Bakers and Pastrycooks’ Unions to determine payment of affiliation dues to the Labour Party: In the former case a majority of over 1000 in favour reduced to 77, in the latter a majority of three to one in favour was wiped out by the above mentioned legislation passed last session by the National Government. Recent letters in your columns have blamed the Labour Government for introducing restrictions, inconveniences, intimidation and dishonesty. Will one of those converts to Nationalism give your readers his honest opinion of this legislation? Would they be in favour of such a policy being enacted at the next General Election, those not exercising their vote to be counted as being against the Government? Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.— Yours, etc., TOM BRYCE. April 8, 1953.
