AMALGAMATION PETITIONS

AREA REPRESENTATIVES CONFER Methods of co-ordinating the cases of petitioners for amalgamation with the City of Christchurch, to be heard by the Local Government Commission at a hearing beginning on March 30, were decided upon at a meeting last evening. About 25 representatives of areas petitioning to leave the counties of Waimairi and Heathcote met at the City Council chambers, the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) presiding. The Mayor was later thanked by the representatives for convening the meeting. Mr W. R. Lascelles, who will be counsel for the City Council before the commission, and the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) were also present. The City Council is itself sponsoring six petitions for amalgamation. A round table discussion took place. The problems of the various areas and the reasons of the residents in seeking amalgamation were fully discussed. The meeting, said the Mayor at its conclusion at 10.30 p.m.. was most representative. and the discussions would prove of value in presenting cohesive cases to the commission.
