BARTER DEALS SUGGESTED

PAKISTAN OFFER OF RAW COTTON Exchanges of raw materials and manufactured goods on a barter basis have been suggested by the Pakistan Government and an American import and export firm in trade information received by the .Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. Pakistan wishes to exchange raw cotton, and the American firm offers truck and car parts and manufactured foodstuffs. According to advice from the trade department of the office of the High Commissioner for Pakistan in Sydney, the Pakistan Government is willing, for a limited period, and up to a predetermined value of imports, to consider offers from firms in Australia and New Zealand for the exchange on a barter basis of raw cotton for machinery, iron and steel, chemicals, drugs and medicines, dyes, cotton yarn, artificial silk yarn, sugar, coal, and wheat. Because of the unfavourable dollar exchange situation in many countries, the American firm wishes to communicate with New Zealand exporters of raw materials or specialised foodstuffs. Another American trade inquiry for foodstuffs has been received from a firm in New York which wishes to import canned sliced apples. In the United States processed apples are distributed as apple sauce, and a 12oz tin sells for about 16 cents. The duty on New Zealand canned apples is 1| cents per lb.
