ACCREDITING TO UNIVERSITY
PARENTS TOLD OF “BIG DRAWBACK”
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 11. A member of the Wellington Colleges’ Board of Governors, Mr A. C. Sceats, said tonight that one of the worst features of the accrediting system for university entrance was that it made parents afraid to criticise teachers. Mr Sceats told parents at the annual meeting of the Rongotai College Parents’ Association that the system gave such power to teachers that geople were afraid to criticise them ecause they would “have it in” for their children.
“I don’t say that it is happening at this college, but it is one of the big drawbacks of the scheme,” he said. For years there had been rumours and murmurings among parents about communism being taught in the schools, but the matter had never been brought out into the light. “You all know why,” he said. The newly-elected president of the association, Mr E. B. Lough, said later that if any parents had any worries about teaching or doctrines they could feel perfectly free to take their problems to the principal and talk them over.
