It is: assumed that Mr Smith, who was ihj the habit of paddling in the surf every] afternoon, was knocked down by a] wave—a heavy sea was running—and was carried out in the undertow. The body was brought ashore by Constable "P. Miller and a man whose name is not known after two attempts had failed. Mr George Piri. a Ministry of Works employee, made the first attempt, but he had to be assisted from the surf, and while two men were attempting a rescue with life-saving equipment the rope broke. Among others who assisted were a warder from the Napier gaoL which overlooks the beach, and two prisoners.
