LOYALTY OATHS FOR TEACHERS
Sir, —After reading an article headed “Loyalty Oaths for Teachers” in Friday’s issue (March 6, page 7) I would like as a parent to draw attention to the new arrangement of the “Students’ Digest.” For years this excellent digest has been published in magazine form, neat, concise and free from propaganda. The student's’ minds were not conditioned. This year the digest is published in newspaper form. In the first issue (February) General Peron is labelled, “Strong Man,” and in the March issue, Signor de Gasperi,, “Democrat,” and General Naguib “Dictator.” I contend that if teachers are to be controlled as to what they think, then so shduld be the widely read “Students’ Digest.” Students should be allowed to form their own opinions and not have their specially-edited reading matter arranged to condition their thinking.—Yours, etc., FREEDOM OF THOUGHT. March 10, 1953.
