SECRET TRADE BY U.S.

LONDON OFFICIAL’S CHARGE LONDON, March 9. A high official in London today quoted what he described as authentic statistics showing that large-scale trade between China and Japan was mostly of dollar origin. He charged that the United States secretly conducted dollar trade with China in commodities branded ‘‘made in Japan.” In Washington today, Senator Joseph McCarthy said 96 former American merchant on which the United States still held mortgages had traded behind the Iron Curtain and carried goods to China since the Korean war began. He said the use of the ships—mostly of Greek and Italian registry—placed the United States in ‘‘the incongruous position” of financing ships being used, to aid the enemy in Korea.
