CURRENT NOTES

Major David Nicol and Mrs Nicol, formerly of Chatsworth road, Heretaunga, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and will make their home at Scarborough. Miss Jeah Stewart, the Olympic swimmer, on Monday joined the staff of the Education Department as an art specialist. She will work in primary schools in the Auckland city area. Before leaving for the Olympic Games last year she studied arts and crafts at the Dunedin Teachers’ Training College, and taught the subject at the Maori Hill School, Dunedin.

Four members of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company, Miss Barbara Jeff ord. Miss Rosalind Atkinson, Mr Terence Longdon and ''Mr Keith Michell were speakers at a meeting arranged by the Canterbury and West Coast branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society yesterday morning. Each speaker emphasised the value of such an organisation and its need of public support. Mrs Cecil Wood, a vice-president, presided, and thanked the speakers, A garden party arranged by the women’s section of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association was held at the Disabled Servicemen’s Reestablishment League Training Centre. The function was opened by the Mayoress (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane). The stalls and stallholders were: cakes, Miss S. Britten and Mrs M. A. Lloyd; sweets, Mrs H. A. Bishop and Mrs G. E. Batchelor; white elephant, Mrs' F. A. Atrow; afternoon tea, Mesdames T. Beer. L. M. Menzies, M. Everitt, GJ. Smith, and helpers. The March meeting of the Fendalton Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs M. Guillermo, Mansfield avenue, yesterday. Mrs Athol Winterbourn presided, and welcomed Mrs O. M. Miller, who spoke on decorative work. Later specimens of Mrs Miller’s work were added to the bring and buy stall, which raised, the sum of £7 7s for the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s buildins fund. Competition results were:—decorative: Mrs H. P. Lawry 1, Mrs W. Wilson 2, Mrs D. Orchard 3. Bloom of the month, A class: Mrs E. W. Archbold 1, Mrs G. Royds 2, Mrs Lawry 3. B class: Mrs R. Rastrick 1. Before leaving Kirwee recently Mr and Mrs J. Coffey were met and bidden farewell by the residents. Mr Lawrey, on behalf of Kirwee residents, presented them with a travelling rug and a gift of money. Many spoke of the high esteem in which Mr and Mrs Coffey were held in the district, and wished them the best of health and happiness in their future homes in Rakaia and Greymouth.

Miss M. G. Havelaar, chairman of the Christchurch committee of the Save the Children Fund, received a letter this week signed by several persons in Holland expressing their thanks for blankets received by them and bought with part of the donation of £lOO sent by the committee immediately after the news of the recent floods.

Mrs R. Gillespie presided at the February meeting of the Cast subcentre of the Red Cross Society, and announced that the sum of £l5 and a large quantity of clothing had been given for flood relief. Arrangements were made to hold a bring’ and buy staid at the annual meeting this month. Cereals and vegetables were handed in for the good neighbour scheme. It was decided to forward a small parcel to a member who has been in hospital for some months. The cadet section of the Christchurch division of the Girls’ Life Brigade held a picnic and sports meeting in the grounds of Risingholme Community Centre on Saturday. The winners of the sports cup were the eighth Christchurch company (Linwood Baptist), -with the eighteenth (Edgeware Road Methodist) second, and the thirteenth (St. George’s Presbyterian) third. The National Club serves Morning and Afternoon Teas in the Lounge daily. —Advt.
