FIRE PROTECTION OF KINDERGARTEN

REMISSION OF RATES REFUSED

An application for remission ofo the fire rate by the Sumner Kindergarten Association was unanimously rejected by the Christchurch Fire Board last evening. The City Council in December granted the association a remission of city rates. The chairman (Mr N. R. Forbes) said the association was paying a very small rate. If the request was granted, it would be dangerous, because requests from all kindergartens would follow. The associations would have no hesitancy in asking for fire protection The small rate would not break them.

Mr T M Charters: It is only a matter of shillings. “These associations and trusts are not as hard up as some pretend to be,” said Cr. C. Baldwin, who moved the motion refusing application. “It is just that everyone should have to pay the fire rate,”
