36 Micro-wave Convictions.— The Transport Department’s first batch of prosecutions for speeding offences detected by the new micro-wave apparatus was dealt with in the Magistrate’s Court by Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M., yesterday morning. Thirty-six offending drivers caught during the Christmas and New Year holidays, mostly on the Main North and Main South roads, travelling faster than 30 miles an hour, were fined amounts up to £3. In each case the procedure of giving evidence was the same—one officer said he had checked a car of a certain make, giving its number, at a certain speed with the micro-wave apparatus, and then a second officer testified to chasing the named car and interviewing its driver.
