The council of the Christchurch centre (decided to recommend to the national as- | sociation that the New Zealand tourna- ; ment should start on December 30 and | finish before January 15. The accorhmoIdation officer had been round the Christi church hotels and had been assured that ! accommodation would be available for i New Zealand bowlers. • The secretary (Mr W. Skelton) reported (that a record entry of 142 fours had been i received for the centre’s Easter fours I tournament. Some fours from Oamaru, [Blackball, Runanga and Timaru would i compete. I MID WEEK TOURNEY BECKENHAM WINS MUNN TROPHY In perfect conditions post-section play in the Christchurch Mid-week Bowlers’ Association’s annual tournament was concluded on the Opawa green yesterday, the II fours who qualified last week taking part. All games were of one and a half hours’ duration except the final, which was played over 21 ends. The Beckenham four won the tournament and the Munn trophy. The green was exceptionally fast, and' many players took time to settle down to the conditions. ’ The games in the first round were very evenly contested, but such was not the case in the second, when runaway victories were scored. Soanes (Shirley) led Jones (Canterbury) 15-2 on the eighth end, then a six, a two, and a single to Jones made him 15-11 down on the eleventh. Soanes scored two on the twelfth end, which was the last, to win 17-11. In a game where only 12 ends were played Mcßeath (Edgeware) could only score four • singles while Richardson (Beckenham) ran up a total of 19 on the other eight to win 19-4. Ball (R.S.A.) required five to win on 1 'the last head, which was very tight, but could only get one. Short (Mount Pleasant) won, 10-7 Shannon (Sumner) beat Muff (Edgeware) 12-6 over 12 ends, Muff scoring on only five. , The semi-finals were fairly evenly contested, although Shannon beat Soanes, 13-8. The final was a runaway victory for Richardson, who with his team played excellent bowls. Shannon had no luck and in many cases took out his shot bowl or turned one of his opponent’s in for an- ; other shot. .As he was so far down on the board, he was forced to play these drastic shots, which would never have been played had the scores been more even, and luck was not with him in playing them. Richardson led 5-4 on the fifth and then went on to be 16-4 up on the tenth and 26-7 on the seventeenth, this being achieved by steady drawing by all members of the team. Shannon then scored , five on the next two ends to be 26-12 down. On the twentieth, a full length end, Richardson scored five. Shannon conceding the game, 31-12. . The winning four were D. McDonald, J. Gribben. D. McCaughan, and H. J. Richardson. The runners-up were H. Hunt, P. Skinner. L. Ross, and T. Shannon. The results were:— First Round.—Shannon (Sumner) 11, Gallagher (Canterbury) 8; Muff (Edgeware) 11, Dann. (Beckenham) 7; Soanes (Shirley) 14, Scott (Spreydon) 11. Byes: Jones (Canterbury).
