OVERSEAS TRADE OF AUSTRALIA

Favourable Balance Of £203,100,000

(Rec. 12.5 a.m.) CANBERRA, March 8. Australia had a favourable trade balance of £203,100,000 for the eight months ending February 28. This waa the best balance ever recorded at that stage in the trade year, said the Acting Commonwealth Statistician (Mr K. M. Archer) today. The value of exports was £542.400.000, and imports cost £339,200,000. It is now evident that this year s trade cheque will considerably exceed the estimates the Federal Government made in its review of trade prospects when import restrictions were imposed about a year ago. The improvement has resulted partly from a recovery in prices, but the greatest factor has been a spectacular rise in the volume of Australian exports.
