ONE WAY BRIDGE AT BECKENHAM

USE. OF SWANN’S ROAD STRUCTURE

The re-erection of the old Swann’s road bridge over the Heathcote river at Birdwood avenue has been decided by the works committee of the City Council. A one-way bridge, it will provide access to the properties on the south side of the river and to the Cashmere Hospital and Sanatorium until a permanent bridge is built As it was considered that the council should have a Bailey or - similar type of bridge available for temporary work, the committee had instructed the City Engineer to make inquiries for the purchase of one. Authority was given by the council for the erection of a temporary footbridge at Dallington as an extra to the contract for the Dallington bridge, the contractor for which, is assembling

his gear. The design of the temporary bridge (single span on pontoon, because thexbed of the river is soft) is largely dependent on the timber available. The contractor for the Swann’s road bridge has enclosed part of the road for his working space, and has begun fabricating the steel for test piles.
